What are the basic properties of abrasives?

As for abrasives, I believe that everyone is very clear. It includes brown corundum, white corundum, black corundum, garnet, silicon carbide, corncob, copper ore and other products. As for the use and physical and chemical indicators of abrasives, I believe everyone also More or less, everyone knows a little bit, but silicon carbide, black corundum, and emery are abrasive products, and they all have abrasive properties. The following is our summary of the basic properties of abrasive products.

1. Higher hardness

The hardness of the abrasive must be higher than the hardness of the object to be processed, and it must have good wear resistance. In general, under the same conditions, the higher the abrasive hardness, the better the wear resistance and the better the cutting performance.

2. Moderate breakage resistance and self-sharpening

Abrasives must have appropriate crush resistance and self-sharpening. During the grinding process, the abrasive grains are subjected to stress such as compression resistance, bending resistance and impact resistance. If the crushing resistance is too low, the abrasive grains will be very fast during grinding. It is difficult to carry out effective grinding; on the contrary, after the abrasive grains become dull, they will not be broken, and new edges cannot appear, so that grinding cannot continue. Therefore, after the abrasive grains are blunted, under the action of grinding stress, the The row is broken, revealing a new sharp edge, allowing the grinding process to continue.

3. The abrasive should have good thermal stability

When the mill is working, a lot of heat is often generated, and the local temperature can reach very high. As an abrasive, it should be able to maintain a certain hardness and strength at high temperature. For example, diamond has the highest hardness at room temperature, but when it exceeds 800 °C, it will be carbonized into graphite, and its hardness and strength will drop sharply, which limits the application of diamond to a certain extent.

4. The abrasive should have a certain chemical stability

The abrasive should be chemically stable and not react chemically with the workpiece, bonding agent and coolant during the grinding process. Grinding is not just a purely mechanical process, chemical reactions also play a very important role. Therefore, the abrasive should be chemically stable to avoid chemical abrasion.

5. Easy to process into particles of different sizes

Abrasives should have processable granulation properties, and can be made into particles with a wide range of sizes, uniform shapes and regular sizes. For grinding, in order to obtain the required machining accuracy and efficiency, the abrasive must be granulated into uniform and uniform particles with a certain particle size. Therefore, materials which are difficult to be processed into particle shape are not suitable as abrasives. For example, cemented carbide, although its hardness is very high, its toughness is also quite high, and it is difficult to process and granulate, so it is not suitable for abrasives.
